The mesh panels help to move hot air up and away from your feet, while the strategically placed leather overlays boost stability and lock these shoes firmly in place on your feet. What I also love about the design of this upper is that it is composed of a blend of mesh and synthetic overlays to boost breathability and stability. While the break-in period can be a little uncomfortable, a good pair of socks can help make the process a little bit easier until the foam padding starts to break in. At first, some runners found that this thick and padded heel collar rubbed blisters into their fit. It boasts a thick padded collar that really hugs your ankle and boosts overall lockdown. The upper in this design is packed with high-end cushioning that wraps your feet in 360 degrees of comfort. What you gain in durability and responsiveness you lose in endurance and agility. However, some runners found that the full-rubber outsole is a little stiff, and makes this shoe a bit too heavy for long-distance running. The thick rubber is incredibly bouncy and responsive and will add an extra spring to your step. ![]() Overall, I would suggest sticking to surfaces such as concrete or asphalt, or a rubber gym floor.īy crafting this outsole with a full rubber design with no exposed EVA foam, it can ride a little stiff. Some runners found that the grooved design in the heel can cause the heel to slip when running in grass or uneven surfaces on trailheads. This outsole offers a textured grip that sticks to the sidewalk, but might be a little less than ideal when running in grass or trails. The solid rubber outsole is incredibly durable and offers a nice and springy ride. The sock liner is nice and breathable and can be removed as needed. If the Charged midsole wasn’t enough cushioning, this daily trainer also includes an EVA sock liner for an extra jolt of cushioning. Not only does this midsole provide a nice and cushioned ride, but it also reduces the strain on your knees and joints while running. When you press down into this shoe, you can see the plush midsole collapse under the weight of your body. The Charged cushioning also helps to cut down on the impact when running on hard and unforgiving surfaces. It may feel a little blocky on those first initial runs but after a few miles the compression foam molds to the unique shape of your foot for a ride that feels as if it was customized for the unique shape of your feet. It’s just one of those shoes that just gets better the more that you wear them. This cushioning is composed of compression molded foam that really contours to the shape of your foot as you run. This demonstrates that the design of this shoe was most likely influenced by a desire for cross-training applications versus running long miles. The midsole is composed of UA’s proprietary Charged cushions for an incredibly responsive ride. Unfortunately, the desire for a lightweight trainer seems to have been overshadowed by the desire for thick leather protection around the toe. The addition of leather and the thickness of the upper makes for a shoe that is not very breathable. There is a lot of material making up the upper portion of the Charged Assert 9. Most likely, the midsole cushioning will break down prior to the outsole or upper wearing out.Īssert 9 provide a dense upper, with leather, that is not too breathable The upper materials also demonstrate their ability to endure for many miles. The rubber outsole will undoubtedly provide for a long life for the Assert 9. Daily training shoes have an average weight of 10.6oz/300g. Compared to other entry-level running shoes, such as the Saucony Cohesion 14, the Assert 9 are quite heavy. Size 12 of the Charged Assert 9 comes in at 11.40z/323g. The Assert 9 is heavier than other entry-level running shoes This prevents the feet from being stable, which allows for some heel-rubbing and movement on each foot-strike. The laces in the Assert 9 are extremely long and there is no additional eyelet at the top for locking down the heel. But rest assured it will grow on you and after a couple of spins you'll have the soulful, Latin funk of “Casa Bey” and the snappy rhymes of tracks like “Quiet Dog Bite Hard” stuck in your head. The Ecstatic is the quintessential grower, and for some that won't be easy to take. Mos Def's rhymes, as a result, sometimes get lost in the shuffle. The production is uniquely executed, with the beats often focusing more on sample placement than drums and bass, but it's this lack of a low-end that sometimes makes your head nod in backwards directions. The Ecstatic is solid from front to back, but it's not always entirely cohesive. Of course the most reminiscent aspect of “History” has to be the hearty reminder that, as talented as he is, Talib Kweli is always better when he's only making an appearance. It's only on the Dilla produced, Black Star re-uniting “History” that it really clicks that this is the same guy who sang “1, 2, 3.it's Mos Def and Talib Kweli”. Not only is it the complete opposite of what I expected from Mos Def, The Ecstatic is light-years away from his classic sound and several aisle's left of centre. On an album full of head-scratchers, it's only on the inexplicably lazy (and explicitly Spanish) “No Hay Nada Mas” that'll have you breaking skin. But the album doesn't tail off after arguably it's best track, because Mos Def has done an excellent job at recruiting a diverse line-up of producers and performers who manage to all put their fingerprints on the music without making the album sound like a third-rate compilation.įrom “Wahid”'s synthesized take on the club banger to the reggae-tinged, “Umi Says” infused “Workers Comp.”, Mos Def inserts bits of his own flair into the masterworks of his list of varied super producers. Madlib's production work manages to make something out of nothing (the samples might as well be muzak) and the Slick Rick appearance dots the is and crosses the ts on what quickly becomes one the years strongest tracks. If I had any doubts about The Ecstatic, “Auditorium” put them to rest. Sandwiched between Oh No's Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious-like “Supermagic” and Madlib's Madvillain-esque “Auditiorium”, the Chad Hugo produced “Twilite Speedball” may be a little too close to Pharoahe Monch's “Simon Says” for comfort, but its almost total lack of thump and emphasis on the one-two-trumpet-guitar beat perfectly complete the album's opening three song punch, bookended by Madlib and his brother's distinguished production work. The Ecstatic does a great job at easing the listener into Mos Def's new left-of-centre aesthetic. Far from a classic but far from True Magic, The Ecstatic is worth more than a passing glance. While it won't have me punning on it's title, I'm at least happy to have him back. Well, The Ecstatic is here and it's made me care. I figured he'd continue rapping, I just never imagined myself caring about it again. Mos Def could now comfortably be put in the same conversation as Common and Will Smith. True Magic, an album most people would pay to forget, solidified this. What was worrisome is that it became almost immediately clear that 'Def had other things going for him. His first album post-The Italian Job, The New Danger wasn't terrible, but it left a lot to be desired. Review Summary: The Ecstatic puts Mos Def on an alternative track back towards hip-hop relevance.Īfter The New Danger came out I was all but convinced that Mos Def had been lost permanently to rapper-slash territory. 6/20/2023 0 Comments Colony magna graecia![]() General overviews of Greek architecture in Sicily and Magna Graecia include handbooks of Greek architecture and more or less detailed general treatments focused on one or both regions in either the Archaic and the Classical or the Late Classical and the Hellenistic periods. Today, in the age of mass tourism, site conservation and site management have become particularly critical issues, especially with respect to the presentation and preservation of architecture. Site conservation has played a major role since the rediscovery of monumental architecture, including in the anastylosis or partial reconstruction of buildings, especially temples, at critical sites like Acragas and Selinus between the late 18th century and the mid-20th century. As well, only in recent years has interest in sacred architecture moved from a focus on design to a larger archaeological and anthropological approach. These excavations were mainly focused on sacred architecture and its design, and only in the second half of the 20th century did the interest of scholars start to shift toward political, domestic, and military architecture. This renewed interest in monumental, particularly Doric temple architecture led to the first systematic excavations at ancient sites in both southern Italy and Sicily, starting in the early 19th century. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, monumental architecture at critical sites, such as Poseidonia/Paestum and Acragas, played a major role in the rediscovery of ancient Greek architecture in Europe, particularly before the systematic development of archaeological research in Greece and Asia Minor. Finally, not only did the Western Greeks play a critical role in the transmission of Greek architecture to the other populations of pre-Roman Italy, but also they had a significant effect on the development of Roman, particularly Republican, architecture. This process led to major construction and significant experimentation and innovation, first, in association with sacred architecture, in the 6th and 5th centuries BCE and later in the field of military architecture, when in the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE and before the advent of Rome in the latter century, the Greeks came under particular pressure from Carthage in Sicily and indigenous populations in southern Italy. Moreover, within a few generations after their foundation, the successful settlements developed a particular interest in monumental building, which was critical, from the Archaic all the way down to the Hellenistic period, in asserting not only the wealth and power of these communities living away from home, but also in constructing and reinforcing their cultural identity. New territories and foundations became available for the development of land division, urbanism, and construction. This expansion toward the West marks an important moment in the history of Greek architecture. However, both definitions are misleading given their strong “statist” associations, which are not appropriate for the settlement processes of the Archaic period, processes that were due more to the initiative of single individuals or groups than to city-states, and ultimately led to the foundation of new city-states independent from their mother cities. The terms traditionally used to describe this process and its results, “colony” and “colonization,” are still convenient labels. Between the second half of the 8th and the beginning of the 6th century BCE, the Greeks expanded toward the West by settling at numerous sites in Sicily, southern Italy (the area of Greek colonization in this region being defined as Magna Graecia), and the south of France and Spain. 6/19/2023 0 Comments Tv pilot outline template![]() These pilots were all 21-27 minutes long (most were 21-22 minutes), but one minute doesn’t always equal one page. Across those acts, the episodes were divided into 11-16 scenes, usually in the 14-15 range. The half-hour dramedy pilots I studied all had 4 or 5 acts (usually 5), including any teaser or tag that might be included. I would not recommend attempting this unless, like Jill Soloway, you already have a full season order from a streaming network. So it does have a formal structure, it’s just not TV structure. 2 The first episode is really just the first half of Act 1 leading up to the inciting incident. (It’s a beautiful pilot that I recommend watching even if it’s hard to take many structural lessons from it.)Īmazon’s Transparent is another pilot that doesn’t fit comfortably in the structure of most half-hour dramedies because each season is written as a five-hour movie. There are definitely some outliers, like FX’s Better Things, which is more of a stream of consciousness “slice of life” pilot, but even that episode has act breaks and still loosely follows the pattern of the other shows I studied, just in a quieter, more subtle way. But if you write about something that matters to you and set it in a world you find interesting, comparing its structure to this template might help you see what your story is missing or why it feels too slow or too rushed. I share this information not to give you a paint-by-numbers template because there are hundreds of TV series out there that take a paint-by-numbers approach to storytelling and most are instantly forgettable. I did a less in-depth version of this analysis for one-hour drama pilots here. I found that all the pilots I studied were structured in a very similar way 1, even across networks. The next step is writing the actual script, or punching up one you’ve already written.Īs promised, I analyzed the structure (length, act breaks, number of characters, and narrative arc) of a group of half-hour dramedy pilots. All in all, aside from your pilot, it's the most important document in your repertoire. So now you know what makes a half-hour dramedy what it is and you know how to get to the core of what yours should be about. This helps them also sell legal and the network on why this thing should hit the air. Executives want tangible proof that they're spending money on the right thing. It also is a great place to aggregate information as your idea grows. This is your chance to write a document that gives us the full tone and story behind the pitch. Sure, you'll usually leave behind a TV pilot for them to read, but you want the readers to be able to unpack your vision as well. When you pitch a TV show, you usually only have 10-15 minutes to get the idea across. You can check out the examples later to see how the pros do it. Once your TV show is picked up, the series bible becomes a living document for you to track what happens inside every season.Įach bible is anywhere from 10-50 pages, depending on your idea. When you're pitching a TV show, the bible is part of your pitch packet, along with the pilot and any other materials. The best way to describe a tv show bible is that it needs to be an in-depth, detailed, and structured version of your complete vision of the television show you are pitching.Ī TV show bible is a formal document used to track the characters, arcs, episodes, and seasons of a TV show. Today we'll go over TV bibles, look at a few examples of them, and even provide you with a free tv bible template you can use for your writing. Television shows are humungous things to keep track of, but the bible keeps everyone on the same page, so to speak. ![]() You need a bible to pitch your TV series, and if the pitch gets picked up you'll need one even more. The answer to that question is the TV series bible. You need to put it all on paper, not only for yourself but for the producers and executives you want to be a part of the show. You can't just keep track of this stuff in your head. You have to plan out the arcs of multiple characters and make sure you have enough developed plotlines to sustain not only one season but multiple seasons. Writing a television show is a massive undertaking. It's also the document that will ensure executives and future staffed writers know what's going on. Writing a TV show bible is the first step in seeing your idea go from paper to the screen. ![]() The latest/stable channel is used by default, but opting to install from a different channel is easily accomplished.
